Mother’s Day might be celebrated with a mom, wife, stepmom, or other maternal figure, but for the purpose of ease,

I ‘m just going to use “mother” for the rest of this blog. Let’s go over some Mother’s Day

WHEN IS MOTHER’S DAY CELEBRATED?
Mother’s Day 2021 is May 9, 2021. It is always celebrated on the second Sunday in May. Traditional Mother’s Day celebrations

include flowers, cards, handmade gifts from kids and teens, and homemade breakfast. More sophisticated Mother’s Day

celebrations include brunch out at a nice restaurant and pretty gifts to show mom that you care.

HOW DID MOTHER’S DAY START?
Mother’s Day was started on May 10, 1908 in Grafton, West Virginia by Anna Jarvis to honor her late mother Ann, who passed away in 1905.

Ann Jarvis, Anna’s mother, spent much of her life teaching other mothers how to better tend to their children to decrease the infant mortality rate.

The event was a smash hit and followed by an event in Philadelphia, where thousands of people picked up on the holiday.

Mother’s Day became a national holiday in 1914, six years after the first event in West Virginia. This is when the second Sunday in May tradition began.

It was signed into official capacity under President Woodrow Wilson.

Of course, this was six years before women’s suffrage was ratified under the same President, who did speak in favor of the vote in 1920.

But Anna Jarvis and President Wilson’s work was predated by that of poet and author, Julia Ward Howe. Howe promoted a “Mothers’ Peace Day” in 1872.

It was a way to promote peace for female anti-war activists. Her idea was for women to gather to listen to sermons,

sing hymns, pray, and present essays to promote peace (National Geographic).

WHAT IS THE BEST FLOWER FOR MOTHER’S DAY?

The white carnation is the official flower of Mother’s Day. On the original Mother’s Day in 1908,

Anna Jarvis sent 500 white carnations to the local church in honor of her mother.

She is quoted in a 1927 interview comparing the flower’s shape to that of a mother’s love: “The carnation does not drop its petals,

but hugs them to its heart as it dies, and so too, mothers hug their children to their hearts, their mother love never dying”

(National Geographic). You can certainly give a white carnation to mom this Mother’s Day,

but your mother or wife might have her own favorite flower that might be a more appreciated option.

After all, a big part of love is knowing the person you care for.
